Breaking down skills into drills...

Brian Astell

Owner and Operator Of TrailWorks

I’ve been racing mountain bikes for about 18 years and 14 as a professional. Competing in many different disciplines has kept it fun for me. I’ve race cross country, Xterra, cyclocross and Enduro. I’ve been fortunate enough to compete on the regional national and world level.

Along the way I’ve been able to ride with coach and help many riders with their riding goals. I started coaching a local triathlon team where I met some really cool jr athletes. After converting them over to the mountain bike and working with them I realize just how passionate I was about helping riders with their goals with mountain bike skills being the focus.

I also saw just how powerful and important it was to work on skills and what a huge difference it made for my athletes in such a short amount of time. There’s one athlete in particular that always comes to mind when thinking about the creation of TrailWorks.

He had never ridden a mountain bike before and after only a year of off and on skills work with him he was able to out ride my friends that had been riding for over 20 years on extremely technical trails that they had built. 20 ft gap jumps, huge rock drops, rocks, roots, steep shoots with free fall drops part way down were all obstacles that he had learned to ride in about a year. I discovered it could be taught in an extremely fast, safe and organized manner.

Soon after that discovery, I decided to focus all my attention on teaching mountain bike skills to athletes from beginner to pro riders. That’s when TrailWorks became a full time endeavor. Teaching riders to ride with confidence, safety, finesse and skill is my biggest passion. I always joke that I coach riders to ride anything gravity and physics allows. Sharing what I’ve learned over the years is a deep love of mine.

Having the opportunity to work in collaboration with Abbie on a Jr. development team is such a fun and fulfilling way to help spread the love and stoke of mountain biking all while helping to further the growth of the sport through new up and coming athletes.

I’m thrilled and honored to be a part of such an amazing team.
